How to become certified

The information on this page includes all you need to know to become a certified RV technician.  Be sure to look at each step and the necessary requirements. 


You must complete three steps to become a certified technician or certified specialist. At step three the Career Ladder branches into two options:  
 

Path 1 – Traditional option where technicians are tested on all RV systems.

Path 2 – Specialty option where technicians are tested in one or more RV specialty areas.

The Career Ladder tests are available online.  To receive a user id and passcode the technician must submit a completed application and meet all of the Career Ladder requirements.

Candidate - The Candidate test is a basic orientation to the RV Service technician career.  The training and test is available at no cost and is located at:  http://www.rvst.org/Candidate/. To take the candidate test now, click here

   

Registered Technician – Complete the required prerequisites.  This test establishes that the technician is proficient in core knowledge areas such as propane, basic electrical, fire & life safety, weight knowledge, and other technical skills as outlined in the RVST Standard/DACUM.

 

Prerequisites: 
1. Complete Step 1
2. Complete 4 task sign-off sheets
3. Complete test application and submit w/payment
4. Test fee:  $150.00

 

Step 3: Select a path

 

 

 

 

 

Traditional Certification – Complete the required prerequisites.  This test is a comprehensive test designed to evaluate both general and specific knowledge as outlined in the RVST Standard/DACUM.  To achieve Master level status a technician must have five years of documented experience as an RV Service Technician and achieve a score of 90.0% or higher (180/200 correct answers) on the "Certified Technician" test.
 
Prerequisites: 
1. Complete Steps 1 and 2
2. Complete 10 task sign-off sheets
3. Complete test application and submit w/ payment
4. Test fee:  $325.00


 

 

Specialty Certification: Appliance, Body, Chassis, Electrical Systems, & Plumbing – Complete the required prerequisites.  Each test focuses on the area of the RVST Standard/DACUM related to the specialty area.  To achieve Master level status a technician must have five years of documented experience as an RV Service Technician and hold current certifications in all 5 specialty areas (master awarded upon completion of LAST specialty).

1. Complete Steps 1 and 2
2. Complete task sign-off sheets where required
    * Electrical Systems Specialist task sign-off sheets
    * Appliance Specialist task sign-off sheets
3. Complete test application and submit w/ payment 
Test fee:  $165.00 / each
